When it comes to creating LEGO MOC (My Own Creation) characters, it has always been a favorite topic among enthusiasts. Designing and crafting themed creations often involve a variety of challenges and complexities, which can deter many players from taking on the task.

Take character clothing, for instance. Figuring out how to use rigid LEGO pieces to convey the softness of fabric requires extensive experimentation by the designer to identify the most suitable parts. Despite the difficulties, one talented MOC designer has found great joy in this process—Eero Okkonen, who excels at using LEGO elements to portray characters with incredible precision and detail.

Hailing from Finland, known as the “Land of the Northern Lights,” Eero started playing with LEGO at the age of two and now has 26 years of design experience under his belt.

As a graduate in architectural history, he incorporates his professional knowledge into his LEGO creations, presenting models that are remarkable both in their fine details and overall composition. His work serves as both an inspiration and a benchmark for MOC enthusiasts to learn from and emulate.

Deinocheirus

As a devoted dinosaur enthusiast during childhood, he had a particular fascination with a dinosaur called Deinocheirus (from Greek), a species from the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Mongolia. Over time, this region has yielded a rich and diverse collection of fossils.

In 1965, a pair of arms over two meters long was discovered by Polish paleontologists. These arms belonged to a previously unknown theropod dinosaur, which was subsequently named Deinocheirus, meaning “terrible hand” in Greek. Its arms were longer than those of any known species today, yet it belonged to the bipedal theropod group, most of which are typically carnivorous dinosaurs.

Eero Okkonen began by creating the head, as it is the most critical part of any creature. While the beak was relatively easy to craft, the eyes took a considerable amount of time and effort to perfect.

More importantly, this creation is the author’s entry for this year’s Bio-Cup competition.

Where the Falling Tears Reach the Sky

The theme for the second round of this year’s Bio-Cup competition is “Classes – Monk.” Here, “Classes” refers to Dungeons & Dragons character classes such as Rogue, Wizard, Cleric, and so on, rather than social or school classes or anything similar. The author chose to focus on the “Monk” class, which typically represents traits like calmness, kindness, and elegance—qualities that resonate with many of the fictional characters he admires.

For the specific character, he chose to create his favorite Bionicle warrior, Keetongu, which also inspired his original online name, (Pate-)Keetongu. Compared to previous models of the same character made by Eero Okkonen, this version of Keetongu leans more toward a humanoid cyborg design. It even reminds me of Transformers…

Anonymous Person in Red Power Armour

Eero Okkonen named this creation Anonymous Person in Red Power Armour,” which feels very fitting—especially since the opaque helmet design perfectly aligns with the idea of anonymity.

Can you guess which LEGO set the red parts came from?

That’s right, they’re from the LEGO 40460 Rose Bouquet set! Many of the pieces in this set are ideal for creating Bio-Cup models, as demonstrated here. We’ve already seen numerous incredible MOCs built by reimagining this set, proving that fans’ creativity truly knows no bounds!

After removing the mask, the Anonymous One reveals her true face. It makes you wonder—what could be her reason for wearing such an impenetrable mask to disguise herself?

Roller Girl

His ingenious use of pink tire pieces, it’s fascinating to wonder where the inspiration came from to repurpose rubber tires as part of the girl’s vest.

At the same time, the color coordination across her outfit, hair, and headband perfectly complements her roller skates, achieving a harmonious and unified overall palette.

First on Mars

This astronaut frog has landed on the red planet aboard its spacecraft. While frogs have their flaws and limitations, they weigh significantly less than humans, which helps lighten the spacecraft’s load.

In this MOC creation, Eero Okkonen cleverly used a wheel hub piece as the character’s headgear, which surprisingly gives off a bit of a chef’s hat vibe! Similar to the previous model, the author consistently finds unexpected ways to repurpose parts, delivering delightful surprises to us all.

Vainolaista vastaan

This is the Eero Okkonen’s entry for the Spring Palikkatakomo competition themed “Medieval Perspectives.” Unlike typical castle-themed works, this creation explores often-overlooked aspects of castle life, such as knights and armies. Finland is home to several medieval castles, including Olavinlinna, the northernmost medieval castle in the world, which existed even before Finland was established as a nation. Among 19 high-quality entries, the author secured fourth place.

The inspiration for this scene comes from Pekka Halonen’s early painting of the same name. The original depicts a group of men in linen shirts and dome-shaped hats, armed with spears and axes, lurking on a cliff by a lake. Eero Okkonen reimagined the scene in a winter setting, drawing additional inspiration from Halonen’s winter landscapes.

Baroness Ruby

Eero Okkonen believes that compared to the conventional blue-dominated fantasy aesthetic, a bloody yet noble red brings a more dramatic and even Gothic vibe. The character’s outfit is particularly striking—a uniform adorned with golden buttons, creating a military-style anime ambiance. However, the creative process was far from simple. This piece sat “headless” on the his desk for several weeks, undergoing countless adjustments before reaching its final form.

The author’s finishing touch was designing and adding a sword and scabbard. He envisioned a sword to complement this sapphire princess, initially planning to craft a red curved blade using 1×6 curved slope bricks.

Ultimately, though, he felt the current design is more refined—a graceful fencing sword with an elegant style.

Princess Sapphire

This MOC creation boasts a strikingly futuristic style, full of texture and aesthetics. Eero Okkonen’s design gives the character a vibrant, radiant appearance brimming with energy.

The princess’s well-developed muscles and strong, powerful physique stand in sharp contrast to the lavender-toned plant accessories. The cape, added later in the design process, accentuates the character’s regal demeanor. I also appreciate the asymmetrical shoulder armor on both sides—a refreshingly unconventional design choice.
